It filters the light in front of your eye
Screens, LED bulbs and phones throw out a heavy dose of short-wavelength blue light — the part of the spectrum your eye scatters most, and the part that makes a bright screen feel harsh in a dark room. The lens coating reflects a share of it away before it reaches you, while everything still looks natural.

Night mode helps with one screen. It does nothing for your TV, laptop, tablet or the LED bulbs overhead. Glasses cover everything you look at.
